I Thessalonians    

Introduction

1.     In the synagogue at Thessalonica Paul reasoned with them out of the scriptures for three Sabbath days

2.     The Jews that believed not set all the city on an uproar and assaulted the house of Jason. They troubled the people and the rulers. The brethren sent Paul and Silas away by night

 

I Thessalonians Chapter 1

1.     Silas and Timothy

2.     Verse 2 records that Paul always gave thanks for the Thessalonians.  5:17 says it is the will of God to give thanks in everything

3.     1) Their work of faith, 2) Labor of love, 3) Patience of hope and trials

4.     1) In word, 2) In power, 3) In the Holy Ghost, 4) In much assurance

5.     Us—Paul, Silas, Timothy

I Thessalonians Chapter 2

1.     Probably the beating and imprisonment in the Philippian jail

2.     They spoke the gospel with much contention (strong opposition)

3.     Deceit, uncleanness, guile, not as pleasing men, flattering, covetous, glory seeking, burdensome

4.     As a nurse (mother) caring fot her children

5.     Their own souls

6.     He would not be chargeable

7.     Holily, unblameably, and justly

8.     As a father deals with his own children

9.     They received the word of God, not as the word of man, but in truth

10.   The Jews killed Jesus, their own prophets, and Paul’s group endured persecution

11.   Satan

12.   The Thessalonian church in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ at his coming, They were Paul’s glory and joy

 

I Thessalonians Chapter 3

1.     Athens

2.     1) Our brother  2) minister of God   3) our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ

3.     1) To establish you. 2) To comfort them concerning their faith,           3) So that no one would be unsettled because of these trials

4.     We are appointed unto afflictions but not unto wrath

5.     In verse 1 it says we “could no longer forbear.” In verse 5 he says “I” could no longer forbear

6.     Good news about their faith and love and that they with good memories longed to see Paul

7.     Paul was encouraged and gave thanks to God

8.     To perfect that which was lacking in their faith

9.     1) Direct his way unto them, 2) Make them increase and overflow in their love for each other and everyone else, 3) Strengthen their hearts so that they would be blameless and holy when Jesus comes

 

I Thessalonians Chapter 4

1.     1) Abstain from fornication, 2) In every thing give thanks

2.     To control his body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust

3.     Unto holiness

4.     God

5.     1) To lead a quiet life, 2) To mind your own business, 3) To work with your own hands

6.     Walk honestly

7.     About Christians who were dead

8.     We have hope

9.     Shout, voice of archangel, trumpet of God

10.   The dead in Christ shall rise first, Those alive and remaining shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord

 

I Thessalonians Chapter 5

I.      1) Like a thief in the night    2) As labor pains on a pregnant woman

2.     Light and day

3.     Not alert, not watching

4.     Alert, self-controlled

5.     This is an abbreviated version of the whole armor of God. In this chapter Paul only mentions the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet, the hope of salvation: In Ephesians, he calls it the breastplate of righteousness

6.     All three mention faith, love and hope.

7.     God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ

8.     1) Know them, 2) Esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake

9.     1) Labor,  2) supervise (over you)    3) admonish you

10.   1) Be at peace among yourselves, 2) Warn them that are unruly, 3) Comfort the feeble minded, 4) Support the weak, 5) Be patient to all men, 6) Don’t render evil for good, 7) Follow that which is good, 8) Rejoice evermore, 9) Pray without ceasing, 10) In everything give thanks, 11) Quench not the Spirit, 12) Despise not prophesyings, 13) Prove all things, 14) Hold fast that which is good, 15) Abstain from all appearance of evil

11.   Spirit, soul, body

12.   Read it to all the brothers

II Thessalonians Chapter 1

1.     Silas and Timothy

2      Their faith grew exceedingly, Their charity toward one another abounded, For their patience and faith in all their persecutions

3.     Scripture talks about being counted worthy to suffer

4.     A righteous thing

5.     His mighty angels

6.     1) Them that do not know God and  2) them that do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

7.     Everlasting destruction

8.     That God would count them worthy of his calling, Fulfil every good purpose of theirs and every act prompted by faith, That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ be glorified in them

 

II Thessalonians Chapter 2

1      Spirit, word, letter supposedly come from Paul

2      1) A  falling away        2) The man of sin be revealed

3.     Opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God       2) As God he sits in the temple of God       3) Works counterfeit miracles

4.     The church

5.     The Lord shall consume and destroy him

6.     Because they received not the love of the truth and believed not the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness

7.     1) A lie  2) The truth

8.     Sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth

9.     Traditions they had been taught by word and Paul’s epistles

 

 

II Thessalonians Chapter 3

1.     That the word of the Lord may have free course, that his group would be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men

2.     Stablish and keep from evil

3.     That they were doing and would continue to do what Paul had commanded

4.     Into the love of God and into the patient waiting for Christ

5.     Withdraw yourselves from him, note the man, and have no company with him that he might be ashamed

6.     Don’t count him as an enemy but admonish him as a brother

7.     He did not behave disorderly, he did not eat what he didn’t pay for, he labored night and day so he would not be chargeable to them

8.     Busybodies

9.      Both say “be not weary in well doing” Galatians 6:9 adds “for in due season we shall reap if we faint not”

10.     He wrote the salutation with his own hand
